Progear : Capcom CPS2 : Cave/Capcom 2001

プロギアの嵐

Progear boot / bootleg / conversion

Various pictures of the
Bootleg / Conversion PCB. The PCB would have started out life as some other CPS2 game, hard to tell which, before it was converted it in to Progear with a new set of EPROMs. Due to Progear being one of the best (and also most expensive) CPS2 titles a fair number of titles have ended up this way.

Once opened it's obvious that the game didn't leave Capcom in this state. Other tell tell signs that it is a conversion are the laser printed Progear label and the fact that blue cased (
US region) Progears are rare as fuck.

Marquee
PosterVarious PCB images

An original CPS2 board below, easily distinguishable. If you're interested in making your own Progear conversion you will need the following things.

Donor CPS2 board. Any game with an F or G PAL
Soldering Iron/solder Etc
30cm of thin wire (not required for PAL G games)
1 x 27c010 EPROM
2 x 27c4096 EPROMs
6 x M27C322 EPROMs
EPROM Eraser
EPROM burner. Needs to compatable with the above, natch.

The 27C010 and 27C4096 can be erased and recycled. The M27C322 can to be purchased from ebay.

I have taken the time to convert the SIMM data from the MAME ROM set to bin format ready for burning. They can be downloaded from here

Burn the files with the EPROM burner.

1 X 27c010 for 1.bin This is the Q-Sound data
2 x 27c4096 for 3.bin & 4.bin. These are the Program ROMs
6 x 27c322 for 11.bin - 19.bin These are the sound and gfx ROMs.

Once burned insert in to the B board and check the jumpers are soldered in this order.

SOOS SO OSOSOS SOSOSOSO SOSOSOSO

The Jumpers are located above 1, to the left of 12 and underneath 16 and 20.
If the donor board used a PAL G you're good to go, if it was a PAL F bend leg 7 so that it does not make contact with the socket then solder a wire between this pin and C13, location C1 on the board. That's pretty much it.

For those interested, the case sticker can be found here

The edited ROM set for HSF2AE can be found here for more bootleg fun. PAL/Jumper settings are the same as Progear but you'll need a few more EPROMs.

2 x 27c010 EPROMs
8 x 27c4096 EPROMs
10 x M27C322 EPROMs

^_^

Note. If the donor board was working then you should remove the battery and short out the capacitor CC1. This removes any charge left on the board and will clear the original encryption keys from SRAM.

Finally, the ROM files for SSF2X have been modified by idc so that they can be programmed on to a regular CPS2 board without the need for the daughter board. Same PAL/Jumper settings apply. The files can be found here.

  1. sorry, what does it means "Any game with an F or G PAL" ???
    thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  2. The PAL3 chip located at 9J on the PCB must be an F or G revision. If the game has a B, D or E revision PAL3 then a straight conversion isn't possible.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Can you convert the ROM simm data for the J version and upload it? I heard they gimped the US version by making it easier, and I only have a J boardset (with G PAL)...

  4. Thanks a lot for the answer!!!
is it possible to swap PAL chips from one board to another????

  5. I would assume so since it's socketed. Ikotsu probably knows more than me, though.

  6. Can you post the jumper settings to convert other boards? Thank You,

  7. The archive contains the Phoenix set. The region is selectable by holding the test button when the Capcom logo is displayed on boot up.

I've been asked not to post all of the jumper settings but quite a few games share the settings as Progear. These include SFZ3, HSF2AE, Mars Matrix, Dimahoo, MVsS & 1944.

  8. Hi , after a while a decided to convert a board to an HSF2AE cause the prices for it are quite prohibitive :( Could you give more detailed on the eproms needed and which burn? Also what game you recommend me to hunt for convert?

I would appreciate a more detailed photo on the jumpers too.

  10. Awesome Tutorial! After I've got everything here, megaupload went down. Can you upload the eprom files again?

  13. I have two dead CPS2 boards. One has a B Pal and the other a E Pal. Is it possible to do this to them or should I toss them? Is there a different jumper setting?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Without the correct PAL you're limited to the games that use them. If you have the tools to program a GAL16V8 then you could download the G PAL jed file and burn it.

  18. Hi, if I have a game with a PAL-B, how do I get AvP on to eproms? Do I need a edited rom set?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yes, you'll need the archives avsp.zip & avspd.zip from the MAME ROM set. Extract both the zip files and burn the following to EPROMs.

    avp.01
    avped.03d
    avped.04d

  20. What is involved with converting a G Pal board to a B Pal Board? Can I just burn a B pal and replace the G Pal? Is there something else going on to make it a B Pal board?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yes. All of the PCBs are the same so with the correct PAL and jumper combination you should be able to run any game. There are a few exceptions that require a daughter board, SSF2X for example, but the vast majority will be fine.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Will the grey/asia cps2 boards work with this?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yes, as long as you have an Asian cart and Asian motherboard.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thank you very much for your hard work and constant dedication to this post. I completed the conversion, but I am having graphical errors. Do you know that speed 27C322s you have. I have 100ns, but I was wondering if you had something higher, like 150ns, which is what came out of my donor board. Also, these are my cksums:

    1 - 004EC0F0
    3 - 00759B81
    4 - 008EB0E6
    11- 009EBFC6
    12- 00966503
    13- 016B6266
    15- 0154B441
    17- 01607234
    19- 0145E595

    ReplyDelete
  25. Graphical errors are usually down to the PAL or the jumpers, make sure they're 100%.

The CRC32 for the archive contents are as follows.

    bdbfa992 Progear Phoenix\01.bin
    0271f3a3 Progear Phoenix\03.bin

  27. Thank you for the job, I have a question, for burn the G PAL to a GAL16V8 i need the .bin file, when I do it with jedutil from mame the result it's a 279byte file, it's correct?

if it's all ok, i need also the wire then or not?

    Thank you

  29. The wire is only needed when using an F PAL.

The jed files are ready to program, no need to convert to bin. Not all burners support GAL16V8.

    1 X 27c010 for 1.bin Q-Sound data
    2 x 27c4096 for 3.bin & 4.bin. Program ROMs

    is that correct?

  32. Stefan. Afaik you would only need the 2 x 27c4096 for 3.bin & 4.bin. Program ROMs.

alex. You'll need a PAL B with the jumpers set like this.

  33. Thanks! I also found another problem on a progear conversion.. the sound effects are strange past the credits screen.. it seems all random effects now and then, even the music is playing wierd :S the jumpers are correct and the donor board was a sfz with burned G pal. (PALCE16). what could cause the sound effects to play random in the game? even at choosing player screen its strange.. thanks for your time! / regards

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hmm i found out that it is the pal 3G that handles the audio so possibly the palce16v8 is faulty or to slow.. Stock is 15ns mine is 25.. Might be a long shot but worth a try.

  35. I just tried this on a MVS and no-go it didnt work, not sure if it has something to do with the sound roms on the MVS being 27C1001 and your tutorial saying to use 27C010 I used a 27C010 but i just get a black/blueish screen, all roms were checked and verified against the roms you uploaded and the MVS was working prior to trying.

  39. Any ideas on making a Capcom Sports Club conversion from a PAL F board?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Sports Club uses a PAL F but I don't have the jumper settings. Afaik all other PAL F games use SOOS_SO_OSSOSO_SOSOSOSO_SOSOSOSO or SOOS_SO_OSSOSO_OSSOOSSO_OSSOOSSO so it shouldn't be too dificult to knock one up.

  43. Can you tell me which brand/type M27C322 you have used? I bought some from an Ebay seller that consistently fail to write at 50%. They are ST brand and have (M27c322 -100F1 58S1K 0435M SINGAPORE)written on the label. I'm using a GQ-4X programmer with 42 pin adapter.

    ReplyDelete
  44. The EPROMs I use are the same ST brand. I'm not sure about the 4X but the 3X you have to move the jumper top left of the adapter and also jump pins A19, A20 & A21 from the programmer to the adapter.

    2. Yes. The MAME files were split in to parts using a hex editor, nothing else. For programming you may have to update the programming software and burn on the slow setting. As for alternatives, the M27V320 possibly but I'm not 100% sure on that.

I've tried burning DD2_shadows over mystara and i've burned a F-gal and graphics look perfect and programroms are working in the tests. But i have no sound.

All eproms are verified. Can it be the jumpers that has been set wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  48. For those of you having issues with no sound - check the jumpers. Likely you'll have to scratch or solder the first 8 or so, if you're using a Marvel Vs. Capcom board at least.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Hi there, tried making a conversion from an xmen cota and having serious graphics and sound issues. Was an asian board if that makes any difference? I've checked all the jumpers and can't find anything wrong, also checked the continuity between the fpal and c13, also fine... What is pin c13 anyway? Just wondering incase it's a faulty a board, haven't got another to check with.. Used 27c4002s, instead of 27c4096 but i'm pretty sure they're the same right? The xmen cota had both in it..

    ReplyDelete
  50. by the way, was trying to make progear

    ReplyDelete
  51. ok, sorted the sound issues. Perhaps a silly question, but what are the crc32 you've posted above? I have a gq4x programmer and I'm not seeing any mention of crc32. Also, the checksums i'm getting are nothing like those posted earlier by mono... Somewhat confused... However, many thanks for the guide. Still very impressed.

    ReplyDelete
  52. The CRC32 are visible alongside the files when you open the archive in WinRAR. Really have no idea why your gfx are scrambled. If the EPROMs have been burnt correctly, the jumpers are good and the F pal has the wire attached there is no reason why it wouldn't work. All I can suggest is to try some 27c4096, maybe the jumpers need to be altered if using 27c4002.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Updated the links to non subscription ones.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Thanks for the reply, i'll try some 4096 but pretty sure they're identical to 4002s. Other hints i've been given is some kind of ram problem or dirty contact/loose trace etc, made worse when I phoenixed it... Ho hum, will post if i solve it.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Alex, I have a GQ4X eprom programmer too and it doesn't always burn 27c4002's correctly (even though they verify), don't know why. It's pretty reliable with the 27c4096's though.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Thanks mate, but sadly it's not that. Just tried with 2 27c4096s and no luck. I'll try reburning all the graphics roms tomorrow and see if that does it...

    ReplyDelete
  57. So, tried reburning all the graphics roms and still no luck.. One of the pins was slightly bent but i've checked it with a multimeter and it's making good contact... Will keep trying.

    ReplyDelete

  66. Hello,
In which way do you modify a romset (like the ones used in MAME) in order to make a convert with 27c4096 and 27c322 EPROMS ?
The mame romsets are often splitted onto files smaller than the files for the conversion (which are 512Kb for the 4096 and 4Mb for the 322)
How do you make the 4Mb files ? I suspect it's not just appended with a hex editor... right ?

    Thank you for the info.

    Cheers

    ReplyDelete
  67. Hi Nicolas, yes, the files are just pasted together using a hex editor. The opposite is used for SF2AE where the files are split using a hex editor.

    Bad characters graphic

  72. Can you mix & match boards, i.e. program a JAP cart board and use it on USA mainboard?

    ReplyDelete
  73. Yes, see the region info here.

    http://wiki.arcadeotaku.com/w/CPS2

    ReplyDelete
  74. So, i found a Sports Club (J) that i'm using as a donor, this is a hackjob straight from Capcom themselves. They wired up a D pal to act as F, when they converted this board, and the case is recycled from Marvel vs SF.. (There is a D pal on the board.)

The D has a wire from pin 9 to pin C13 on CN5.
I'll check if this works for modding as F by wiring up the other pin as well... (need sleep)

    ReplyDelete
  75. Mweh. This was a 'Capcom Special' cart is seems, as the 'D' marked pal turned out to be a normal F pal, and i needed to remove the old jumper wire to get this to work.

Hint for others: Bend the pal pin #7 out of the socket to get the music/sound effects to work properly, otherwise it's garbled crap. It's not mentioned to bend this pin out of the socket, and the pics don't clearly show it (yes, only when zoomed..).. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  76. Thanks for pointing that out. I've updated the text slightly.

    ReplyDelete
  77. You mentioned that for HSF2 the roms were split, but does this work the other way around too?

Example, 11M was split to two 4MB files, '11' and '12' for HSF2. When looking at AVSP the '11M' and '12M' files are 2MB, can i join them into a single 11M file for a 27C322 in slot 11M? And, repeat this for 13 +14 -> 12M? Looking to save a few eproms, i don't have enough of them.. :)

    ReplyDelete
  78. I imagine it would (for the Gfx) as long as the jumpers are correct. Only one way to find out. ;)

    13+14 > 13
    15+16 > 15
    17+18 > 17
    19+20 > 20

the last two sets of jumpers should be:

    SOSOSOSO SOSOSOSO

Not sure about the sound jumpers (under sockets 11&12) probably best not to combine ROMs 11 & 12.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Hi, just got an original Progear, and it has a BGS-B3E inside, just letting you know ;)

    ReplyDelete
  80. What is involved in the conversion of the simm data from the mame rom to the .bin format ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There is no conversion per-se, just joining the files together and renaming.

Something like (from a DOS window)

      copy /b simm1+simm2 output.bin

      Or use a hex editor

    1. I have a similar question. How should the existing MAME romset (the roms in ssf2t.zip) be merged? What would be the corresponding jumper settings after that?

Also, this needs a B pal as well, right?

Thanks again for your amazing work! This all has been awesome.

  86. I'm working on a 1944 conversion, and I see that the even numbered GFX ROMs were actually 8Mbit mask roms, not 32Mbit. Earlier you say the graphics jumpers are SOSOSOSO SOSOSOSO, but in pictures I see they are OSSOOSSO OSSOOSSO. I've verified all my roms, but when I start it up, i just get a green screen. I've shorted the battery cap also so its not left over key data.

  93. Did the conversion, and had a few issues with graphics which I sorted out...

Last problem was that the music was playing wrong, and all the eproms were ok, and I tried another GAL just incase. Still bad.

Googling a bit found this comment on Arcade Otaku. CPS2 Gal Problem

Turns out I have a 93646B-4 revision board which has a routing error which means a G GAL won't just 'work'.

Soldered the wire to pin 9 of the GAL and its all working. (as per CPS2 Gal Problem 2

Heads up to others with this issue. Doner was a Street Fighter Alpha..

  95. Hi, thank you very much for the tutorial, please could do a tutorial on how to convert a Mars Matrix?

I you could recommend a burner epromms? what you are using?

Thank you again and happy holidays :)

    P.D: Sorry for my english.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Mars Matrix uses a G PAL and the same jumper combination as above (SOOS SO OSOSOS SOSOSOSO SOSOSOSO)

    You will also need.

    1 x 27c010 EPROM (for mmx.01)
    3 x 27c4096 EPROMs (for mmxud.03, mmxud.04 & mmxud.05)
    10 x M27C322 EPROMs (for mmx.11m through to mmx.20m)

Download the regular set, mmatrix.zip and the pheonix set, mmatrixd.zip.

Burn mmx.01 and mmx.11m through to mmx.20m from the regular set, put these in sockets 1, and 11 through 20.

    Next burn mmxud.03, mmxud.04 & mmxud.05 from the pheonix set and place in sockets 3, 4 & 5.

You should be good to go.

  97. Hi Ikotsu, I am having problems with a DnD Shadows Over Mystara as well. I have it up and running but not sound and some of the sprites are black, like certain character's weapons, but at least 90% of the sprites are correct. The roms I am using work fine in MAME though? I see in the romset there is a qsound.bin, do I have to paste that into one of the other roms to make it work somehow? Pleeeease help as I'm almost done with this game but no sound! :(((

    1. You'll need an F PAL and the jumpers solder like;

      SOOS SO OSSOSO OSSOOSSO OSSOOSSO

      Delete
  98. Any tips on soldering jumpers? I made a SSF2X conversion out of a PAL F game, and while I successfully made the F>G PAL trick, I can't get the jumper settings to work. I know I did at least one right though, because I now get the voices clearly, but otherwise the graphics and music are scrambled.
And just to get it out of the way, I tried using a G PAL and got the same results, so it's definitely the jumpers. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  99. Use a multimeter to check the continuity of each jumper individually.

Are you using the files from this page?

    http://ikotsu.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/ssf2x-conversion-capcom-1994.html

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, I used the same files.

Though thank you for suggesting the multimeter, that did the trick. I thought a couple of jumpers were open, but it turned out they had a speck of solder in them, and that was enough to make them closed.
Now I have the habit of checking every jumper individually no matter how they look.

      Thanks again!

You're best, assuming your board has an F or G PAL, would be to burn idc's SSF2X.

  102. Hi. Thank you very much for the tutorial. It´s really fantastic.

I have a question. How can I convert a Rockman: The power Battle?. I want to buy it but it´s very hard to find. I read that pcb was launched in limited edition in CPS2. Originally was launched en CPS1.

I have a programmer, eproms and dead CPS2 board but I don't know what type of PAL I must use (F or G or another) and jumpers combination.

    Thank you very much again.

      Hope this helps.

    2. Thank you very much for the information. But I need to know how can I make the conversion. That game have a daughter board and files are numered in another order, so I have to order the files (samples and gfx) to make compatible in a single dead board and 42 pin eprom, just like SSF2X.

  107. Hi, is there a way to burn a D&D shadows over mystara in a PCB "B PAL"? 108. So, in case someone is interested, I successfully made myself a fully functional Super Street Fighter II - The New Challengers conversion using a PAL G by joining the 8 QSound 512kb roms into one 4Mb rom (1x 27c322) and recombining the GFX roms to save chips (4 chips instead of 8) this way: 11m (16mb) + 2x 12m (2x 8mb) = 32mb (one 27C322 instead of 1x 27C160 + 1x 27c800). Simply use the same jumper settings for any game such as Progear. I built a SSF2T trying to fill the hole of playing SSF2-The new Challengers as you won't find information on how to build a conversion of the latter. But the fact is that I simply don't like SSF2T. I almost hate it in every way! It just doesn't feel like Street Fighter for me. Since I played it in the arcades back then I thought it was so screwed. I never liked the idea of turbos. If you need some advice....... I'll be around. I feel really comfortable just playing SSF2 - The Tew Challengers.

    1. Hello I have a CPS" of new callengers and the daughter board doesn'r work properly, I want to replace for the combined eprom 11 that you made, How can I made one?...

  109. I had a working Capcom Sports club that stopped working after transporting it to an event.

However The PAL chip is labeled BGSB3E rather than an F pal as you state.

I suspect during transport a solder ball got knocked loose and is causing corrupted graphics and an Access Error.

Do you know the Jumper settings for an E PAL?

The game was working perfectly before, so I think an E pal is the correct one for the board.

I also wonder what would happen if i swap an F PAL from an XvsSF into it and change the jumpers accordingly...
